STATION L
Co-authored with Anton Semyzhenko.
The completion of the Lviv railway station, per the design of the Polish engineer Zieleniewski, is still nine years away. This afternoon, the neatly spaced floor tiles at the Transcarpathian station of Velykyi Bereznyi are being sweptâin preparation for the grand opening. People are slowly gathering, their gazes fixed downward. There, a brand new narrow-gauge railroad track has been laid. A train approaches from the distance: clunky, sluggish, beautiful. Its warmth fills the air with steam.
âShhhhhhhâ whistles through the station as the train breaks.
The crowd bustles in admiration. Some whisper excitedly among each other; loud and indistinct cries of excitement escape othersâ lips. The residents of Velykyi Bereznyi have cause for celebration: Their village has now become important for all of Austria-Hungary. And they know whom to thank: the small group of burly men who are diligently inspecting the track bed. Is it strong enough? Are the tracks sitting firmly? Are the metal and wood sturdy enough to last for years to come? The men live here in Velykyi Bereznyi, though they only became locals recently. The need to build a railroad brought them here from a Slovak village three hundred kilometers away. Their task is now completed. The train has pulled out, yet the Slovak families will remain here forever.
